The Center for Gifted Education
at The College of William and Mary, a research and development
center, was established in 1988 under the direction
of Dr. Joyce VanTassel-Baska. The Center provides services
to educators, policy makers, graduate students, researchers,
parents, and students in support of the needs of gifted
and talented individuals. Located in Williamsburg, Virginia,
the Center has established a national reputation for
excellence in research, curriculum development, and
service. Several major grants, including funding from
the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education
Act, have provided significant support for the work
of the Center.
Mission Statement
The Center for Gifted Education is a learning community
that values and fosters the talent development process
of individuals over the lifespan. |
Goals
- To provide graduate education programs
and opportunities for individuals interested in teaching
gifted students and/or assuming administrative and
leadership positions in the field of gifted education.
- To provide selected programs and
services for precollegiate learners and their families.
- To develop, field-test, and disseminate
curriculum in relevant content areas at appropriate
developmental levels.
- To conduct research and evaluation
for dissemination to relevant audiences and for data-based
decision-making.
- To provide professional development
to promote leadership and exemplary practice.

National
Advisory Board
In March of 2002, the Center held its
first National Advisory Board (NAB) meeting. Members
of the Board provide insights on Center operations,
offering their perspectives as representatives from
academia, school districts, other gifted centers and
the community at large. At the Annual Meeting, Board
members review the progress of the Center in meeting
its mission and offer recommendations organized around
that mission and the goals of the Center.

Director
Dr.
Joyce VanTassel-Baska is the Jody and Layton
Smith Professor of Education and Executive Director
of the Center for Gifted Education at The College of
William and Mary in Virginia. Formerly,she initiated
and directed the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern
University and has also served as a state director of
gifted programs, a district coordinator, and a teacher
of high school students.
Dr. VanTassel-Baska has published widely,
including 15 books and over 275 refereed journal articles,
book chapters and scholarly reports. She has also served
as the Editor of Gifted and Talented International,
a publication of the World Council on Gifted and Talented.
Currently, Dr. VanTassel-Baska is the President of the
National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC).
